WHAT IS DRY EYE SYNDROME?

Dry Eye is a medical condition of the ocular surface system that affects tear production and/or drainage. It is one of the most common disorders seen in any eye doctor’s office.

Patients with Dry Eye may complain of eye stinging, burning, itching, redness, irritation or discomfort. Vision may be blurred, causing difficulty viewing a computer, watching television, or seeing clearly while driving.Left untreated, severe Dry Eye may lead to inflammation/ulceration of the cornea, Meibomian Gland disease, or other ocular complications.

In the past, this condition has often gone unrecognized and undiagnosed. Patients may have been advised to “home-treat” their uncomfortable symptoms with measures such as artificial tears, warm compresses, lid scrubs, or medicated drops. All of these remedies treat symptoms but cannot treat the problem.

Only recently has a treatment known as The Toyos Optimum Dry Eye Treatment, which uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy, become available to target the cause of Dry Eye, and to reduce or elminate symptoms. IPL has helped many patients with Dry Eye to reduce their discomfort and improve their quality of life.

WHAT ARE IPL TREATMENTS LIKE?
First, the area around the eye is cleansed, and external stick-on IPL shields are applied to the eye area. Then a thin layer of cooling gel is applied to the treatment area. IPL treatments are accomplished through a handpiece attached to the IPL system. When the pulse of light is administered, there is a momentary sensation that is easily tolerated.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
Treatments are repeated once a month over the course of 4 months.

WHO ARE THE BEST CANDIDATES FOR IPL TREATMENT?
The best candidates for The Toyos Optimum Dry Eye Treatment are patients with moderate to severe Dry Eye, or patients suffering from Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).

FOLLOWING TREATMENT:
Immediately after treatment, the area is cleansed and the patient can return to normal activities. The use of sunblock is recommended on any treated are as that may be exposed to the sun.

WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT?
After the initial treatment, most patients report some improvement in their symptoms. Studies have shown an objective increase in tear function after each treatment, with the maximum improvement happening after the fourth treatment. Depending on the severity of the dysfunction, some patients may need fewer treatments while others may need more. All patients need maintenance therapy at least once a year.

IPL THERAPY – FINAL CONSIDERATIONS:
Have you been living with Dry Eye for too long?
